About the author

Joseph Dillard

Joseph Dillard, LCSW, PhD, is a psychotherapist, author, and the developer of Integral Deep Listening (IDL), a phenomenological approach to perspective-taking that integrates dreamwork, life issues, and developmental psychology. For over four decades he has explored the relationships among consciousness, adaptation, dreaming, and human development.

His recent work focuses on Adaptive Reorganization Theory (ART), an interdisciplinary framework examining how individuals, organizations, and civilizations preserve—or lose—the capacity to continually adapt. His books include The Harmony Trap and The Development Trap, with The Adaptive Civilization currently (2026) in development.

Joseph’s writing bridges psychology, evolutionary theory, systems thinking, dream research, and philosophy to investigate one central question: Why do adaptive systems stop adapting, and how can they regain that capacity?
