Avoiding Collapse #1 (Narrative)

How do we recognize the warning signs of collapse—and respond while we still have choices?
In “Avoiding Collapse,” Joseph Dillard explores how individuals, institutions, and civilizations become trapped in patterns that undermine their ability to adapt. The series examines why we continue destructive habits despite recognizing their costs, how past successes can obstruct necessary change, and when letting something end can help preserve what matters.
Drawing on Adaptive Reorganization Theory (ART) and Integral Deep Listening (IDL), the series explores:
• Why unnecessary collapse happens.
• What an evolutionary perspective reveals about adaptation and resistance to change.
• How to distinguish useful stability from destructive rigidity.
• How dreams and IDL interviewing can help us question familiar assumptions.
• Practical steps toward greater flexibility, accountability, and sustainable relationships.
This opening video introduces warning signs at three scales: personal, institutional, and civilizational. Examples include problematic drinking and compulsive overwork, Enron’s accounting warnings, Shakespeare’s King Lear, Athens’ disastrous Sicilian expedition, and the Trojan Horse in Virgil’s Aeneid.
The episode asks how warnings get dismissed, why belonging can discourage honest questioning, and what we can do when preserving an established way of life begins to endanger it.
The guiding question: What am I working so hard to preserve that I have stopped asking whether it still supports life?
